New Brighton has long been a hub for creativity and craftsmanship. This seaside town is not just known for its scenic views and community spirit but also for the remarkable artists and makers who call it home. Among them, Sandman Peter Donnelly stands out as a beloved figure whose work has left a lasting mark on the town’s cultural landscape. Beyond Donnelly, a vibrant community of artists and crafters continues to shape New Brighton’s identity with their unique talents and dedication.
The Legacy of Sandman Peter Donnelly
Peter Donnelly, affectionately known as the Sandman, gained fame for his extraordinary sand art on New Brighton Beach. His art was more than just temporary beach creations; it was a form of storytelling that connected locals and visitors alike to the spirit of New Brighton.
His legacy lives on through a commemorative storyboard installation showcasing his work, celebrating his creative contributions and inspiring future generations of artists. This tribute was made possible through the dedication of Sandscribers Aiyanna and Wayne, whose passion has ensured Peter’s work is not forgotten. Thanks to some funding from "Soup Night", organised by the Driftwood Council of New Brighton, you can find these storyboards across from the New Brighton Seaside Playground at 207 Marine Parade.
